The City of Covington's Historic Preservation Office is currently accepting nominations for the Covington Preservation Excellence Awards. These awards aim to honor projects that have successfully preserved or revitalized historic buildings within the community.

"The awards honor projects that have preserved or revitalized historic buildings throughout our community," stated Kaitlin Bryan, Covington Historic Preservation Officer.

Nominations must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1. Eligible preservation projects should have been completed between January and December 2024. The winners will be selected by the City’s Economic Development staff. Nomination forms are available on the Covington Preservation Excellence Award Program webpage.

Awards will be distributed across five categories:

- Exterior Restoration-Residential: This category recognizes historic residential projects where exceptional care was taken in restoring the building's exterior while respecting its historic fabric and setting.

- Exterior Restoration Mixed-Use/Commercial: Similar to the residential category, this award acknowledges mixed-use or commercial structures restored with exceptional care towards their historical context.

- Adaptive Re-use Residential: Recognizes successful adaptive reuse of a residential property, incorporating historic materials as a key element in the design of new uses for existing buildings.

- Adaptive Re-use Mixed-Use Commercial: Acknowledges successful adaptive reuse of mixed-use or commercial properties while retaining significant historical elements in new designs.

- Interior Excellence: Honors outstanding achievements in preserving, restoring, or rehabilitating building interiors for residential, mixed-use, or commercial purposes.

"Award-winning projects will embody the goals of preserving, protecting, and celebrating Covington’s built heritage and its unique sense of place," added Bryan.

To nominate a property for an award, complete a nomination form with supporting documents and submit it to the City of Covington’s Historic Preservation Office at City Hall located at 20 W. Pike St. For further information regarding the program or questions about nomination forms, contact Kaitlin Bryan at (859) 292-2171 or email kaitlin.bryan@covingtonky.gov.

The award ceremony typically occurs in May during National Historic Preservation Month but this year it will coincide with the Covington Authenti-CITY awards during National Economic Development Week from May 11 to May 17. Details regarding location, date, and time are yet to be announced.
