Covington residents now have the opportunity to enhance gun safety in their homes through a new initiative by the Covington Human Rights Commission. In collaboration with the local police department, free cable-style gun locks are being offered to gun owners within the city.
The locks function by threading a cable through the action or barrel of a firearm, preventing it from being loaded or fired. This initiative covers various firearms, including semi-automatic pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns. These safety devices can be collected from Covington Police Headquarters during weekday business hours.
Residents must provide proof of residency but should refrain from bringing their firearms when collecting a lock. "DO NOT bring your weapon to the police department as doing so is a safety risk to everyone," cautioned Capt. Justin Bradbury. He further emphasized that officers will not assist in attaching the locks.
Approximately 80 locks are available for distribution. To assist gun owners in using these locks properly, Sgt. Rachel White features in an instructional video produced by the Community Liaison Unit.
Mike Steinman, vice chairman of the Covington Human Rights Commission, highlighted the importance of this program in preventing accidental or intentional shootings. He expressed hope that residents would utilize this resource to protect themselves and others.
Capt. Bradbury reiterated support for reducing preventable gun deaths and expressed eagerness to distribute as many locks as possible within the community: "If it saves even one life, it is worth it."
