Ron Washington Mayor | City of Covington
Ahead of the recent Martin Luther King Day, an out-of-town group affiliated with the KKK distributed racist flyers in various locations across Greater Cincinnati, including Covington. This act is part of a recurring effort by the group to spread their message several times a year.
The City of Covington has consistently responded firmly to such incidents. The city's stance remains that these flyers aim to gain attention and publicity for the group's divisive message. The city refuses to share images or discuss these flyers publicly, as they do not wish to assist in spreading the group's agenda.
Covington emphasizes that while the First Amendment protects freedom of speech, it does not permit harassment or intimidation. The Covington Police Department continues to monitor for any threats or violent behavior related to this incident and encourages residents to report any occurrences.
Covington promotes itself as an inclusive city welcoming people of all races and backgrounds. Recently, Ron Washington was elected as the city's first African-American mayor, highlighting Covington's commitment to diversity. In his inaugural address, Mayor Washington stated: "As your mayor, I work for the 40,000 residents of Covington."
He further remarked on Covington's history-making election: "Our city has shown just how welcoming it can be. Covington made history by electing its first Black mayor – but that’s not because of my race, but because of my qualifications and the content of my character."
Mayor Washington affirmed his dedication to inclusivity: "We honor our LGBTQ community, our Black and Brown neighbors... we are in this together... this commitment... is not just part of our past—it is the bedrock of our future."
