Covington, Kentucky has achieved a perfect score of 100 for the third consecutive year on the Municipal Equality Index (MEI), an evaluation conducted by the Human Rights Campaign. This index assesses how inclusive a city's laws, policies, and services are for LGBTQ+ individuals.

The MEI evaluates 506 cities across the United States based on criteria such as non-discrimination laws, municipal employment practices, city services, law enforcement relations, and leadership in LGBTQ+ equality. Covington's consistent high score reflects its commitment to diversity and inclusion.

City Manager Ken Smith emphasized that supporting the LGBTQ+ community involves more than just cultural events. "Supporting the LGBTQ+ community is a lot more than a parade, a festival, and drag shows," he stated. "You have to make sure your laws and employee policies walk the walk."

In addition to Covington, Lexington and Louisville also received perfect scores in Kentucky. Covington officials highlighted that their MEI score aligns with their broader efforts to create an inclusive environment through branding initiatives, event sponsorships supporting LGBTQ+ causes, and backing organizations like the NKY Pride Center.

The city's economic development strategy underscores its reputation as a leader in human rights policies. A national site selection consultant noted that Covington's welcoming nature contributes positively to its economic growth by attracting creative talent from outside areas.

Overall scores for other Kentucky cities included Berea with 67 points, Frankfort with 66 points, Morehead also at 66 points, Bowling Green at 51 points, and Owensboro at 50 points.
