Covington is set to enhance its wayfinding capabilities with the introduction of an interactive outdoor kiosk designed to assist residents and visitors in navigating the city's attractions. The initiative is a collaborative effort between City officials, the regional nonprofit Southbank Partners, and RoveIQ, a digital signage company based in Covington.
According to Covington Economic Development Director Tom West, the new wayfinding markers along the Riverfront Commons will showcase the city's appeal beyond its traditional boundaries. West remarked, "As the reinvigoration of downtown Covington continues south along Madison Avenue, these new wayfinding markers will help visitors see that our ‘cool factor’ on Madison isn’t just between the river and Seventh Street but keeps going south."
RoveIQ CEO PJ Thelen highlighted the experiential focus of the smart kiosk, emphasizing its role in providing real-time information and services tailored to both visitors and residents. Thelen stated, "Our No. 1 application is wayfinding, and the emphasis of our other applications is around driving education and activity specific to local businesses that include hotels, restaurants, and bars."
Southbank President & CEO Will Weber mentioned that the specific location for the kiosk in Covington is yet to be finalized to ensure visibility and protection from potential high-water events. Weber expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming installation of wayfinding signage along the Riverfront Commons, emphasizing its role in connecting urban communities in Northern Kentucky.
The project, with an initial cost covered by Southbank Partners and Rove IQ, is expected to enhance the city's navigation infrastructure while offering valuable information to visitors and supporting local businesses. Advertising revenue is anticipated to offset the City's costs associated with the kiosk's maintenance and operation.
Weber concluded by stating, "We are excited to work with our partnering cities and recognized industry leaders to finally install signage along the Riverfront Commons this summer."
