Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) has reintroduced a bill that aims to allow voting-age adults to purchase handguns. The bill, called the "Second Amendment For Every Registrable Voter Act" (SAFER Voter Act), seeks to repeal the federal law that currently prevents individuals between the ages of 18 and 20 from purchasing handguns from a Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder.

Massie argues that adults between the ages of 18 and 20 should not be denied the right to defend themselves and their families. He points out that individuals in this age group are considered adults and are allowed to vote, form business contracts, get married, and serve in the military. Therefore, they should not be deprived of their basic constitutional rights.

The SAFER Voter Act has garnered support from several co-sponsors, including representatives Lauren Boebert (R-CO), Kat Cammack (R-FL), Andrew Clyde (R-GA), Scott DesJarlais (R-TN), Jeff Duncan (R-SC), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Harriet Hageman (R-WY), Doug LaMalfa (R-CA), Alex Mooney (R-WV), Ralph Norman (R-SC), and Scott Perry (R-PA).

The Gun Owners of America (GOA), a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to protecting the right to keep and bear arms, has endorsed Massie's legislation. Aidan Johnston, GOA's Director of Federal Affairs, states, "The current 18 to 20-year-old handgun ban says that the Second Amendment is a second-class right, relegated to the backwaters of the Constitution. Gun-grabbers believe that if they can disarm young people in the years prior to turning 21, they can discourage and depress gun ownership for a new generation of Americans. That’s why Rep. Thomas Massie’s SAFER Voter Act is so important because it restores the right of young adults to purchase handguns for self-defense."

The National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR), the second-largest gun rights group in the nation, also supports the SAFER Voter Act. NAGR President Dudley Brown emphasizes that denying 18, 19, and 20-year-olds the ability to purchase a handgun based solely on their age is discrimination. He urges all Members of Congress who consider themselves pro-gun to immediately co-sponsor the SAFER Voter Act.

Representative Massie, who serves as the Co-Chairman of the Second Amendment Caucus in the 118th Congress, is leading the charge for the SAFER Voter Act. The text of the bill, H.R. 6782, can be found on the official website of the House of Representatives.

If passed, the SAFER Voter Act would allow young adults between the ages of 18 and 20 to exercise their Second Amendment rights and purchase handguns for self-defense purposes.
