During the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, many workplaces adopted remote work strategies to safeguard employees from a then poorly understood virus. Over time, this work-from-home approach persisted. However, in Covington, there has been a gradual increase in the number of employees returning to physical workplaces, although these numbers have not yet reached pre-pandemic levels.

The data on employee presence is gathered using Placer.ai software, which tracks daily foot traffic associated with "work locations" across the city, including downtown areas. This software collects data from numerous partner mobile apps that gather information from mobile devices. It uses this data along with algorithms to distinguish between visits to work locations and those made for residential or leisure purposes.
