A new parking facility named the "Green Lot" is set to open at 212 E. 8th St. in Covington, Kentucky. This addition aims to address the increasing demand for parking in the area while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of what was previously a deteriorating asphalt lot with a chain link fence.
The Covington Motor Vehicle Parking Authority has plans to upgrade the lot by adding new asphalt. They have already installed solar lights and planted various trees, including viburnum, redbud, and dogwood, along the south side. On the north side, two tulip poplars—Kentucky's official state tree—have been planted to eventually provide shade.
"The Parking Authority is diligently working to improve the city’s public spaces," said Kyle Snyder, Executive Director of the Covington Motor Vehicle Parking Authority. "While we are focused on providing safe and affordable parking options, it is also our goal to ensure that public parking areas are visually attractive consistent with the surrounding neighborhood."
Snyder noted that the lot's natural slope will facilitate rainwater runoff into the newly added landscaping. He also mentioned that the lot will help meet additional parking needs from SparkHaus, an entrepreneurial hub located at 727 Madison Ave. in the former Sims Building.
In another effort to manage city parking, changes have been made regarding the John R. Green building. At the time the John R. Green Lofts were built three years ago, the city invested $2.5 million in return for 92 parking spaces. The agreement with the apartment complex was to manage the parking and turn over proceeds to the city to repay the bond, but the lot did not generate revenue. Now, the Covington Motor Vehicle Parking Authority will directly manage the parking.
"We’re trying to find the right balance, managing parking for the greater good and generating funds to improve and grow our parking assets, all to make Covington an even better place to live, work, and play," said Snyder.
Monthly permits for the Green Lot are priced at $30. For details, contact ABM Parking Services at (859) 431-7049 or visit their website.
