Read Ready Covington is launching a reading challenge on March 4 for children in preschool through 3rd grade. The initiative, which continues until April 8, encourages families to engage with their children using the Footsteps2Brilliance and Clever Kids University digital apps.

Mary Kay Connolly, director of Read Ready Covington, explained that these apps are designed to enhance vocabulary, phonological awareness, comprehension, and problem-solving skills. She emphasized the importance of parental involvement in early literacy development: “People often think learning to read is a natural process and starts in school. Actually, the first and crucial knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes about learning occur starting at birth with active encouragement and participation by the adults in a child’s life.”

The challenge is open to Covington children aged 3 through 3rd grade or those attending educational programs within the city. Both digital apps are available in English and Spanish on various devices.

To participate, children must read stories and songs daily for at least 75 minutes each week using their own accounts on Footsteps2Brilliance or Clever Kids University. Parents can track progress through their accounts as well. Participants will be entered into weekly raffles for prizes.

Each week during the five-week challenge, six students will be selected to receive awards.
