Work has officially commenced on the redevelopment of Austinburg Neighborhood Park in Covington, Kentucky. The project, which has been long-awaited, aims to bring new life to the park and provide a quality recreational space for the community.

According to Ben Oldiges, the former Covington Parks & Rec Manager, the neighborhood has been eagerly anticipating the park's transformation. He expressed, "That neighborhood has been very hungry for a quality park space – the kids in the community are really hungry for it. It’s going to bring a lot of energy and positive buzz to that neighborhood. I know they’ve been really desperate for a safe new park space, and they deserve something fantastic that they can be proud of."

The redevelopment project was initiated in 2021 with community engagement events to gather ideas for the park's redesign. Funding of $300,000 from a federal Community Development Block Grant was secured in October 2023 to kickstart the construction process.

Mayor Pro Tem/Commissioner Ron Washington highlighted the excitement surrounding the renovations at Austinburg Park, stating, "Exciting renovations at the park, including a new playground and newly paved basketball courts, will offer something for everyone."

Recreation Insites of Franklin, Indiana, has been hired to carry out the redevelopment work, which includes new sidewalks, playground equipment, basketball courts, a seating area for a soccer mini pitch, a shelter house, an informational kiosk, and a dog park. Oldiges mentioned, "Every few weeks there should be a new development. The entirety of the project will be ready by summer."

The enhancements at Austinburg Park will not only focus on recreational facilities but also include a landscape makeover with flower beds, raised beds, additional trees, and improved signage. The park aims to become a central hub for community events and recreation programs.

Furthermore, a generous donation of $20,000 from Rizzo Bros. Painting Contractors has made the construction of a new dog park within the premises possible. Oldiges also hinted at potential future additions to the park, such as sports facilities like pickleball courts.

The revitalization of Austinburg Park is set to bring a wave of positivity and vitality to the neighborhood, fulfilling the community's desire for a safe and engaging outdoor space.
