Chief of Police Tom Grau has announced his retirement after more than 29 years of service with the Florence Police Department, effective May 1, 2024. Chief Grau, a 1995 graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Criminal Justice, has held various roles within the department, from Corporal to Chief of Police.
Throughout his career, Chief Grau has been recognized for his commitment to excellence and dedication. He has served in multiple capacities within the department, including patrol, detectives, community resources, and the Crime Suppression Unit/Drug Unit. Chief Grau's innovative initiatives, such as the Teen Academy program, have had a significant impact on the community and earned him accolades like the 2011 Kentucky Court of Justice Award and the 2009 Officer of the Year award from the Florence Rotary Club.
Mayor Aubuchon praised Chief Grau's leadership, stating, "I have always known the city was in good hands under Chief Grau’s leadership. His unwavering dedication and commitment to our community have made a lasting impact." The Mayor also highlighted Chief Grau's role in developing internal candidates who will be ready to assume the position of Chief of Police in the future.
As Chief Grau prepares to step down, he leaves behind a legacy of professionalism, integrity, and dedication. His influence on the department and the community will be felt for years to come. The City of Florence extends its best wishes to Chief Grau as he embarks on his well-deserved retirement.
