Two veteran officers were sworn in as Covington Police officers, bringing a wealth of experience back to the Department. Justin Schmidt, with almost 10 years’ experience, and Dave Coots, with over 30 years in law enforcement, were welcomed by Covington Police Chief Brian Valenti.

“We’re getting a wealth of experience here,” Chief Valenti remarked. “It’s not every day that you get to welcome 30 years of police experience back into the Police Department. I’m really looking forward to that maturity.”

Schmidt, who spent six years in Covington before starting his own business, and Coots, who retired from Covington PD after 22 years and was hired back under a special program, will undergo an abbreviated field training program before joining Covington’s Patrol Bureau.

Mayor Joe Meyer, who swore in the officers during a ceremony at Covington City Hall, emphasized the importance of community relations in Covington. Meyer praised Chief Valenti and the Department for their commitment to maintaining a positive relationship with the public.

The officers' training will include administrative procedures, certifications, and field training, with Chief Valenti expecting them to complete all training within about 12 weeks in total.
