15 Patriots Earn Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete Honors

For the second consecutive season, the Cumberlands football team has at least 15 student-athletes garner Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete recognition for their academic achievements, the national office announced Tuesday.  UC is one of three Mid-South Conference schools with at least 15 selections.

For the Patriots 11 of their 15 honorees are multiple time selections, led by four-time selections Myles Simon and J.R. Lucas.  Simon, the fifth-year senior, led the Mid-South conference with 8.5 sacks this season with added 12 tackles for loss.  He is also a two-time CSC Academic All-District selection.  Lucas caught five passes for 83 yards this season to earn this honor for the fourth time in his career.

Two-time MSC First-Team All-Conference selection Kendall Adams-Young is a three-time recipient of this honor.  Adams-Young had 40 tackles, five sacks, and 11.5 tackles for loss on the season.  He was also a CSC Academic All-District selection this season.

Nick Buzzell, Adam Caudle, Phillip Garner, Addison Ironside, Chase Parmelee, Trace Sexton, Micah Swim, and Jacob Ward were the Patriots that have earned this distinction in consecutive seasons.   

In addition the those 11 players, four Patriots student-athletes garnered this honor for the first time in their careers; Andreas Anderson, Nathan Boles, Brendan Lester, and Joe Lucas.

In total over 900 football student-athletes from across 89 NAIA institutions were recognized.  To be eligible student-athletes must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.50 and must have attended one full year at said institution.

UC went 5-5 on the season, including a 24-23 win over #11 Georgetown.  The Patriots had seven MSC all-conference selections, while Malik Thornton was named the MSC Defensive Freshman of the Year.
