Thomas Massie, a U.S. Congressman representing Kentucky’s 4th district since 2012, shared his opposition to the recent Department of Defense appropriations bill through a series of posts on July 18, 2025. In his tweets, Massie detailed foreign aid allocations within the bill and cited concerns about national priorities and fiscal responsibility.
In his first post at 15:25 UTC, Massie listed several items included in the appropriations: “$300 mil Syria & Iraq military $118 mil overseas disasters $15 mil AIDS in Africa $500 mil Israel $350 mil Kuwait $1.27 bil foreign security $500 mil Taiwan $500 mil Jordan $267 mil reimburse countries”.
Moments later, he expressed his rationale for voting against the bill: “This isn’t first. I voted against this, because it won’t Make America Great Again; it will bankrupt us.”
Massie also acknowledged fellow Representatives who opposed the measure: “Thank you @RepMTG and @RepTimBurchett for also voting against this misappropriation of military funds.”
Thomas Massie has served as a member of Congress since replacing Geoff Davis in 2012. Before joining Congress, he held roles in state government including service in the Kentucky House of Representatives and as Lewis County Judge Executive. Born in Huntington, West Virginia in 1971 and currently residing in Garrison, Massie earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1993.
