Thomas Massie, a U.S. Congressman representing Kentucky’s 4th district since 2012, posted several statements on August 26, 2025, criticizing aspects of current Republican policies and defending free speech.

In a post at 14:27 UTC, Massie wrote: “The CHIPS Act is a Biden corporate welfare program that failed. Only 24 Republicans voted for it. It should be part of a rescissions package, but instead it’s now being used to socialize corporate ownership. More conservatives should speak up. Roll call: https://t.co/jEsZf2CKZg https://t.co/sQeIzklxXK”.

Later that day at 18:21 UTC, he commented on the issue of flag burning and free speech: “I would never burn an American flag, but it is free speech.”

In another post at 18:52 UTC, Massie questioned party consistency regarding economic policy: “I’m not for socializing any of it, but why does the GOP seem to have a double standard now?”

Massie’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about the CHIPS Act and broader issues of government involvement in private industry. The CHIPS Act was passed in 2022 with bipartisan support to bolster semiconductor manufacturing in the United States; however, it has faced criticism from some lawmakers who argue it constitutes unnecessary corporate subsidies.

Massie has represented Kentucky’s 4th District in Congress since succeeding Geoff Davis in 2012 and previously served in state government roles. Born in Huntington, West Virginia in 1971 and currently residing in Garrison, Massie graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1993.
