Covington, Ky. - The Covington Police Department welcomed its newest officer, Judah Hartenstein, during a ceremony at Covington City Hall. Hartenstein, who previously served as a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper and is currently a 2nd Lieutenant in the Ohio Army National Guard, took the oath of office in front of his family and several high-ranking officers.
Hartenstein began his patrol duties in Montana in September 2021 and joined the Ohio National Guard in February 2017. He has held the rank of 2nd lieutenant since August 2023. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati, where he was an ROTC Cadet. Hartenstein hails from Liberty Township, Ohio.
Mayor Ron Washington administered the oath and shared insights on Covington's diversity and unique character. He highlighted the dual nature of police work: "It’s a tough job but it’s a very honorable job," Washington stated. "And I’m not going to lie to you – it’s a fun job."
Police Chief Brian Valenti presented Hartenstein with his badge and emphasized the department's core values: integrity, professionalism, justice, compassion, and respect. "These represent our core values," Valenti remarked. "I look forward to having you on the street."
Hartenstein will bypass attendance at a downstate training academy and instead participate in Covington’s in-house field training program after completing specific training related to Kentucky law, policy procedures, use of force, and additional administrative instruction.
