The Covington Police Department has been named the "Public Safety Department of the Year" by the Kentucky Women’s Law Enforcement Network (KWLEN). The award was presented at KWLEN's 25th annual conference in Bowling Green, recognizing the department's efforts to promote enthusiasm, harmony, gender equality, and diversity within both the organization and the community.

KWLEN highlighted that Covington PD demonstrated an open attitude and attentiveness to community needs. Covington City Manager Ken Smith acknowledged this recognition as a testament to the department's dedication to maintaining safety and inclusivity in a diverse city. “Covington is a very diverse city with folks of all walks of life, and we’re very intentional about making everyone feel welcome," said Smith.

Police Chief Brian Valenti’s strategic plan focuses on implementing a community-oriented policing model. Valenti expressed appreciation for being recognized statewide: “Being recognized statewide by an organization such as KWLEN is very special to me.”

Sergeant Rachel White nominated the department for this honor, citing its commitment to inclusion and collaboration under Chief Valenti's leadership. White noted significant changes following the release of Valenti’s strategic plan, including forming a new unit focused on community relations.

The new unit employs intelligence-led policing strategies to address crime more effectively. It collaborates with various city departments to tackle quality-of-life issues. This approach has reportedly strengthened relationships between officers and residents.

White also emphasized improvements in officer training focusing on essential skills like moving and shooting, room clearing, and defensive tactics. These efforts aim to enhance service delivery for Covington's diverse population of over 41,000 residents.
