The City of Florence, in collaboration with the Simon Kenton Chapter Kentucky Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Boone County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, is set to host a dedication ceremony for Revolutionary War Veteran Reverend William Carpenter. Private Carpenter was a member of the Culpepper Militia and fought at the Battle of Yorktown.
Private Carpenter's contributions during the American Revolutionary War were significant, as he witnessed General Cornwallis's surrender in 1781. His service alongside his father highlights their commitment to independence.
Following his military service, Carpenter pursued theological studies and became an ordained minister. He served as pastor at Hebron Lutheran Church in Madison County, Virginia from 1787 until 1814 before moving to Hopeful Lutheran Church in Boone County, Kentucky, where he remained until his death in 1833.
The upcoming ceremony will include unveiling a new headstone and Pomeroy Marker to honor both his military and pastoral contributions. Community members, descendants, and local officials are invited to attend this event aimed at commemorating local history.
The event will feature speeches by historians, a color guard presentation by the Sons of the American Revolution, and wreath-laying by various organizations. A musket demonstration is also scheduled.
Parking is available at Florence Senior Center with shuttle services starting at 1:00 p.m. The ceremony details are as follows:
