COVINGTON, Ky. – The 2024 FotoFocus Biennial, the largest photography and video biennial in the United States, brings an array of art events to Covington this weekend.

The theme for this year's biennial is “backstories,” which refers to stories within photographs that are not immediately understood. Visitors are encouraged to study the images closely and discuss their interpretations over drinks at various events.

At Purrfect Day Cat Café tonight, attendees can participate in Collaging and Kitten Cuddles with Annie. All materials will be provided for creating themed collages, inspiration boards, or tributes while kittens provide companionship.

An exhibit titled Southern Democrat opens tonight at The Carnegie. Curated by Phillip March Jones, it features artists whose work explores themes of place and change, inspired by William Eggleston’s Election Eve. Eggleston’s photographs from Plains, Ga., taken during Jimmy Carter's 1976 presidential campaign, offer a different view of the small southern town compared to media portrayals.

On Saturday morning, Covington Urban Forester Patrick Moore and Kenton County Cooperative Extensive Agent Brandon George will lead an Urban Tree Walk: Eastside. They will discuss invasive plants and species such as the spotted lanternfly while visiting around 30 trees.

Braxton Brewing Co.’s Opera Fest on Saturday celebrates the release of its BonBonerie Opera Cream Stout with six variants on tap and an opera performance by Grace Graham followed by live music from Last Scouts. Attendees can also enjoy BonBonerie Opera Cream cupcakes.

Creative House of Art & Design hosts Drink Draw & Drag on Saturday evening, featuring cocktails, art instruction, charcuterie, and a drag performance inspired by Edgar Allan Poe.

Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar will celebrate National Bourbon Heritage Month on Sunday with an OKBB Single Barrel release of Buzzard Roost bourbon at 116 proof. Mike Adams and the Buzzard Roost team will discuss bourbon heritage and their unique aging process.

Local artist Mark Schlachter’s “Familiar Faces” Opening Reception takes place Sunday at Behringer-Crawford Museum as part of the FotoFocus backstories Biennial. Schlachter's project captures hidden stories of a fictional diverse community in Indiana.

Live music performances include The Missy Werner Band at Molly Malone’s Irish Pub & Restaurant tonight; Kenny Cowden at Smoke Justis on Friday; Doug Hart Band with Jamie Carr Band at The Village Theater on Saturday; and Hanabie at Madison Theater on Sunday.

Additional events include AniManga Night at Kenton County Public Library tonight; Graeter’s Monthly Donut Pop-Up at Braxton Brewing Co. on Friday; Covington Farmers Market on Saturday; and Belly & Brunch at The Roost Latonia on Sunday.
