COVINGTON, Ky. – Earth Month – aka “April” – will be celebrated in Covington with events and activities related to trees, beautification, waste disposal, recycling, and pollinator gardens. The City of Covington is gearing up for a month filled with volunteer opportunities to help build community and foster a love for the planet.

Sheila Fields, the City of Covington’s Solid Waste & Recycling Manager, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming events, stating, “April has a little of something for everyone – and we are looking forward to a great turnout.” She highlighted the diverse range of activities available for volunteers, from cleaning up litter to planting trees and flowers, all aimed at making a lasting impact on the community.

Patrick Moore, the City’s Urban Forester, emphasized the sense of accomplishment and giving back that volunteers experience during tree plantings, saying, “You might get a little dirty and will probably be tired afterward... as you watch the trees grow year by year, you will feel even better about having helped build Covington’s tree canopy.”

Partnerships with organizations like Keep Covington Beautiful (KCB) and the Covington Urban Forestry Board have led to a variety of events throughout the month. These include book sales supporting sustainability, maintenance of the Goebel Park Pollinator Garden, tree planting initiatives in Latonia, waste disposal opportunities, and the annual Great American Cleanup.

The City of Covington has been recognized for its commitment to urban forestry, receiving accolades such as being named a Tree City USA for the 20th consecutive year and receiving a Tree City Growth Award for the eighth year in a row. Covington has also been honored as a Tree City of the World for the third year, a distinction held by only 48 cities in the United States.

As Covington prepares to celebrate Earth Month, residents are encouraged to participate in these events that not only beautify the city but also nurture a sense of community and environmental stewardship.
