Mayor Joe Meyer expressed his excitement about the progress in the pending transformation of the IRS “Flat Top” complex site in Covington, Kentucky. He stated, “This has been a dream and a challenge and it’s been a lot of hard work, so this is a day where we quite frankly ought to celebrate the accomplishment and thank the staff and the support people for all the work they’ve done to get us to the point where we are turning the dream into a reality.”

The City of Covington announced that Bray Construction Services will commence Phase 1 of public infrastructure work at the site on Monday. This $14.9 million contract will involve the construction of streets, sidewalks, utilities, and a public plaza. Tom West, Covington Economic Development Director, mentioned, “After just a few short years, that day is here.”

Following the infrastructure development, Drees Homes will build 16 townhomes as part of the $7 million development on “Block B.” Ben Taylor, Northern Kentucky Division President of Drees Homes, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We look forward to collaborating with the City to launch this innovative new neighborhood at Covington’s Central Riverfront site.”

The Covington officials have meticulously planned the redevelopment process, dividing the 23-acre site into smaller parcels to be developed by various selected developers. Mayor Meyer highlighted Drees Homes’ commitment to Covington, citing their past projects in the city as examples of their dedication to enhancing neighborhoods.

The site, once home to an IRS tax-processing facility, is now cleared for redevelopment after years of planning and demolition. The City's collaboration with developers like Bray Construction and Drees Homes marks a significant step towards the realization of a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood in Covington.
