The Covington Board of Commissioners has officially recognized and commended a Covington Middle School security guard for his heroic actions that saved the life of a student. On December 7th, Markie Behanan, the school security guard, sprang into action when 13-year-old Brayden Smith started choking on a piece of food in the Holmes Middle School cafeteria.

Behanan, who is skilled in the Heimlich Technique and CPR, immediately administered the maneuver on Brayden and successfully dislodged the item caught in the young man's throat. Behanan's quick thinking and training played a crucial role in saving Brayden's life.

"My first reaction was to go right into what I know how to do, and that’s to start with the Heimlich," said Behanan. "I wasn't nervous, I didn't panic."

Mayor Pro Tem/Commissioner Ron Washington presented Behanan with a letter of commendation from the City of Covington during a Commission meeting. Washington praised Behanan's actions and described him as an "awesome" and "fantastic" asset to Holmes Middle School.

"It is my honor to present Markie Behanan with this letter of commendation for heroic action," Washington said.

To further honor Behanan's bravery, the Board of Commissioners declared December 7th as "Markie Behanan Day" in Covington. This resolution acknowledges Behanan's selfless act and serves as a testament to his commitment to the safety and well-being of the students at Holmes Middle School.

Behanan, a lifelong resident of Covington, not only serves as the school's security officer but also assists with the Holmes Middle School basketball team. It was through his involvement with the team that he received training in the Heimlich Technique and CPR.

"He's really good with the kids," said Bradie Bowen, assistant principal at Holmes Middle School. "He handles situations so calmly and level-headed. He's definitely an asset to our school."

The recognition and commendation bestowed upon Markie Behanan by the Covington Board of Commissioners highlight the importance of well-prepared and dedicated individuals in ensuring the safety of students. Behanan's heroic actions serve as an inspiration to others and serve as a reminder of the critical role that school security guards play in our communities.
