Cumberlands Starts The Week With A Sweep Over Johnson (TN)
15th ranked Cumberlands sweeps the day taking the first game 16-1, then followed with an 8-0 victory over Johnson University Royals, behind a 6-6 two-homerun day from Evan St Claire.
Game 1
Jorge Garcia got the start and the win as he pitched a shutout going 6.0 innings. He only allowed four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Josh Descher came in close pitching 1.0 innings allowing two hits and one run.
At the plate, Charlie Muniz went 3-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. St Claire also went 3-3 with a triple and four RBIs. Both Sujel Arias and Ryan Shavers had doubles and two RBIs. While Josiah Santiago lone hit was a solo homerun.
The Patriots put up nine runs in the bottom of the first to take a commanding lead. Raphy Almanzar got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Muniz notched his first double of the inning through the right side for an RBI. Two batters later, Max Harper reached on an error, followed by a Josh Simon walk. With the bases loaded, Shavers got hit by a pitch to score a run for the 2-0 lead. Next, St Claire would single up the middle for two RBIs. Santiago would then get hit by a pitch to reload the bases, and Caden Petrey singled to left field for two RBIs and the 6-0 lead. With two outs, Muniz notched his second double down the left-field line for another RBI. After a change of pitchers, Arias notched a two-RBI double to right center for the 9-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, the Pats scored six runs in the third. Muniz led off the inning with a single through the left side, followed by an Arias walk. Harper then stepped in the box, singled to left field, and went to second on an error. Both Kevin Perez and Arias would score on the error. After another pitcher change, Simon got walked, then Shavers followed with a double down the left-field line for the 12-0 lead. St Claire would then notch a two RBI triple down the right field line for the 14-0 lead. The Royals walked back-to-back batters. Almanzar then singled up the middle for an RBI and the 15-0 lead.
Cumberlands scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth, by Santiago as he led off with a solo home run over the left field fence for the 16-0 lead. The Royals were able to get one run across in the top of the seventh but could not get any closer as the Pats won 16-1.
Game Two
In game two, Patriots notched their third shutout of the year. Bryan Juarez pitched 6.0 innings only allowing two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Joe Bertram came in to close and pitched 1.0 innings, getting two strikeouts. St Claire led the way in game two going 3-3 with two home runs and a double for three RBIs. Shavers also added a home run, while Muniz and Harper added a double each.
After a scoreless first and second inning, the Pats get on the board first in the third putting up five runs. Almanzar led off the inning with a single through the left side. Muniz followed with a double to left center for an RBI. Arias then got walked, while courtesy runner Perez went to third on a wild pitch. Then Harper notched an RBI double to right center for the 2-0 lead. A couple of pitches later, Arias scored on a passed ball. Two batters later, St Claire hit a two-run shot over the right-center fence for the 5-0 lead.
Later in the fourth, the Patriots added another run, as Luis Alvarez got hit by a pitch and stole second three pitches later. He would advance to third on a throwing error. Almanzar got an RBI from a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Patriots started their at-bat with back-to-back home runs. Shavers got it started with a two-pitch bomb over center field. then St Claire followed with a bomb to left center to make it an 8-0 game. Cumberlands held on to the 8-0 lead to sweep today's doubleheader. Cumberlands moves to 12-2 on the year and will host Union tomorrow for a single nine-inning match.
