UC Notches Their First Series Win Of The Year
Patriots took care of business in today's doubleheader to take the weekend series 3-1 over Lawrence Tech. UC took game one 18-6, the notched a shutout to take the final game 2-0.
Game One
Garrett DeClue got his first start and win of the season, as he pitched 5.0 innings. He only allowed four hits and no earned runs, with three strikeouts. Javier Martinez came in relief and pitched 1.2 innings. He allowed four hits and two runs with three strikeouts. Skyler Sutton made his first appearance of the year and got the final strikeout to end the game.
At the plate, three Patriots notched homeruns. Starting with Josh Simon who went 1-2 with his lone hit being a solo homer. Sujel Arias went 2-4 with and homerun and four RBIs. Caden Petrey notch his first homerun as a Patriot in grand slam fashion. Ryan Shavers also had a good game going 2-2 with two RBIs and a stolen base.
After a scoreless first inning, the Patriots put up seven runs. With one out Simon got walked, and Shavers singled to left center to put runners on the corners. Evan St Claire came to the plate and notched an RBI single through the right side. Petrey then reached on an error and Shavers scored to make it a 2-0 game. Raphy Almanzar got walked to load the bases and Charlie Muniz notched a two RBI single through the right side to make it 4-0. Next, Arias stepped to the plate and hit a three run shot over the left field fence to make it 7-0.
In UC's next at bat, Simon led off with a solo homerun to left field. The Blue Devils would walk the next three of four batters to fill the bases. Then with two outs, Muniz singled down the left field line for two RBIs. Muniz would go to second on an error and UC scored another run to make it 11-0. Next, UC added one more run as Arias singled to left field for an RBI.
The Blue Devils scored two runs in the top of the fourth, and Cumberlands responded with six runs in their at bat. Shavers got walked to start the inning and would steal second in the next few pitches.
Lawrence Tech would walk the next two batters to fill the bases. Then with the bases loaded, Petrey hit a grand slam ball over the left field fence to make it 16-2 game. Later in the at bat, with two on, Shavers singled up the middle for two RBIs.
The Blue Devils would score four more runs before the end of the game but the Pats still got the win 18-6.
Game Two
Game two was a pitchers duel. Knicko Billings got his first win as he pitched 5.1 innings. He only allowed one hit in the sixth inning, with eight strikeouts and one walk. Cesar Avila came in relief and got the save as he pitch 1.2 innings allowing two hits with two strikeouts. St Claire went 2-3 with two RBIs, while Arias also went 2-3.
Joining the action in the fourth, with one on and one out Simon got walked. Both baserunners would advance on a throwing error. Then two batters later, St Claire notched a two RBI single up the middle to take the lead.
UC found themselves in trouble later in the sixth, as the Blue Devils had the bases loaded. But a strikeout from Avila would neutralize the threat and the Pats would go on to win 2-0.
