KYTC District 6 has initiated a resurfacing project on W. Fourth Street in Covington, Kentucky, aimed at enhancing road safety and connectivity for all users. The work commenced on June 5 and involves milling and paving operations from Garrard Street to Philadelphia Street.

The project is the result of a year-long collaboration between Covington and KYTC to transform Fourth Street into a safer thoroughfare for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. Elizbeth Wetzel, Covington’s Director of Special Projects & Inter-Governmental Affairs, stated, “KYTC and the City have worked together over the past year to realize this realignment of Fourth Street, reclaiming a highway running through the middle of Covington as a safer street for everyone whether they’re on four wheels or two, two legs or four.”

Work will be conducted overnight from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., with one lane open during these hours and two lanes maintained during non-working hours to minimize traffic disruptions. Bob Yeager, Chief District Engineer for KYTC District 6, emphasized the project’s goal: “Our goal is to create safer roads for all users. This roadway reconfiguration in Covington will improve safety for bicyclists and make the road leaner by reducing the lane width for motorists.”

The project includes reducing vehicular travel lanes from three to two between Garrard and Johnson Streets while narrowing them from 12 feet to 11 feet wide. A dedicated bike lane will replace the current right lane on W. Fourth Street, featuring a five-foot width with a two-foot buffer from traffic.

Signage upgrades will accompany clearly marked travel lanes for both motorists and cyclists to denote changes in traffic patterns. The schedule is subject to change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. Updates are available at District 6 Roadshow or Driving Northern Kentucky Progress websites.
