Northern Kentucky softball earns second seed in Horizon League with extra-innings win

Northern Kentucky University Norse softball secured the second seed and a first-round bye in the Horizon League Championship after defeating IU Indy 6-2 in extra innings, according to a May 2 announcement.

The victory concluded Northern Kentucky’s regular season, giving them an overall record of 23-23 and an 11-7 mark in conference play. The result positions the team to skip the opening day of the league championship tournament.

In Saturday’s game at IU Indy Softball Complex, both teams were scoreless through four and a half innings before IU Indy took a two-run lead in the fifth. The Norse rallied late, tying the game at two runs apiece by scoring twice in the seventh inning. In extra innings, doubles from Mack Brow and Jena Rhoads helped secure four more runs for Northern Kentucky.

Makaree Chapman started for Northern Kentucky, allowing two earned runs over six innings. Alicia Flores pitched two scoreless relief innings to earn her ninth win of the season. Offensively, Brow led with three hits and two RBI while Brielle DiMemmo contributed with a key RBI single to tie the game late.

The Norse will begin their postseason run on Thursday, May 7 at 2:30 PM against either RMU or Detroit Mercy.
