Northern Kentucky University’s baseball team began its weekend series against the 20th-ranked Florida State Seminoles with a 7-3 loss on Friday at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida.
Florida State started strong, hitting a solo home run in the first inning and adding to their lead in the second with two extra-base hits. In the third inning, Northern Kentucky drew two walks and Hunter Friedberg executed a bunt that led to both runners scoring after an errant throw by the Seminole pitcher, tying the game. However, Florida State regained control with RBI groundouts in both the third and fourth innings.
Northern Kentucky loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but managed only one run before being retired in order for the remainder of the game. The Norse struggled offensively throughout, collecting just one hit—a single by Jake Paulick in the sixth inning—over 28 at-bats.
On the mound, Logan Wilson started for NKU, allowing three runs over three innings while striking out four batters. Cody Little pitched two innings of relief and gave up one run. Carson French entered in the sixth and surrendered two runs over 1.1 innings with three strikeouts, while Gannon Wentz finished with 1.2 innings of one-run pitching and struck out two.
Northern Kentucky now holds a record of 7-5 (0-0 Horizon League), while Florida State improved to 11-2 (0-0 ACCC). The series continues Saturday when NKU faces Florida State at 2 p.m.
