COVINGTON, Ky. – In 2008, Master Chef Rich Chu and his son Johnny opened KungFood AmerAsia at 521 Madison Ave., quickly establishing it as a staple in Covington’s dining scene. The restaurant features a menu inspired by Hunan, Szechuan, and Taiwanese cuisine within an eclectic setting.
Johnny Chu has infused his artistic talents into the decor of the restaurant. Walls are adorned with kung fu movie posters and vibrant Asian art, creating a unique atmosphere complemented by music that may include Wu-Tang Clan tracks. This combination has been recognized as a blend of cool ambiance and quality food.
Covington Business Retention and Expansion Manager Patrick Duffy praised the establishment, stating, “It’s more than a restaurant; it’s a work of art.” Despite the presence of numerous dining options in Covington, KungFood AmerAsia remains distinctive for its boldness and vibrancy. Duffy also highlighted the restaurant’s legendary menu and exceptional beer list.
In addition to KungFood AmerAsia, Johnny Chu and his wife Hana have expanded their influence in Covington with KungBrew Cafe located at 640 Main St. in MainStrasse Village. This coffee and tea shop is another reflection of their creativity and commitment to the community.
Patrick Duffy expressed gratitude towards the Chu family for their contributions to Covington’s cultural landscape: “Thank you, Johnny, Hana, Chef Chu, and the entire KungFood AmerAsia crew for keeping Covington flavorful, fearless, and full of character.”
The Authenti-CITY awards were first introduced by Covington’s Economic Development team in 2021 during National Economic Development Week. The awards aim to recognize businesses, places, events, people, and organizations that authentically represent Covington’s spirit without formal criteria or rules.
