The City of Florence will hold a rededication ceremony for the Boone County Veterans Memorial on Saturday, August 23, 2025. The event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. and will take place at the Florence Government Center, located at 8100 Ewing Boulevard in Florence, Kentucky.
The Boone County Veterans Memorial was established as a tribute to the service and sacrifice of veterans from Boone County. This year’s ceremony will specifically honor H.B. Deatherage, who played a key role in bringing the memorial to Florence. The original project received support from then-Mayor Evelyn Kalb in 1995, leading to its placement at the Government Center.
Renovations to the memorial include six illuminated flagpoles and black granite monuments inscribed with the names of 81 Boone County service members who lost their lives in military conflicts. A ring of commemorative pavers has been added to recognize veterans and supporters. The central area pays tribute to those killed in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the War on Terror. Additional granite markers honor POW/MIA personnel, Purple Heart recipients, and members of the Kentucky Veterans Hall of Fame. There is also a memorial bench dedicated to Charles C. Fleek, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.
The ceremony will feature patriotic music along with formal presentations including the presentation and retiring of colors, singing of the National Anthem, remarks by local leaders, and Taps performed during a moment of reflection. Afterward, attendees are invited to visit the renovated memorial site on campus.
The event is free and open to all members of the public. Community members—especially veterans and their families—are encouraged to attend as a way to honor those who have served or continue serving.
