The City of Covington has announced the 30 members selected for its first Mayor’s Academy, an eight-month program intended to increase resident engagement and understanding of city government. The program begins in August 2025 and will run through April 2026.
Participants were chosen from nearly 100 applicants through a competitive process. The group includes residents from neighborhoods across Covington, such as Mainstrasse, Latonia, Westside, and others. Their professional backgrounds are varied, with representation from local universities, health networks, public agencies, large employers, and small businesses.
Mayor Ron Washington commented on the significance of the class: “The members of the inaugural class embody what makes Covington a truly special place to live and work—individuals from diverse backgrounds united by a shared commitment to strengthening our community,” he said. “It is our hope that, upon graduation, these community leaders will feel empowered to continue shaping a brighter, more vibrant future for Covington.”
Monthly sessions will be led by elected officials and senior city staff. Topics covered include city administration, budgeting, public safety, public works, parks and recreation, legal issues and human resources, as well as neighborhood services.
While most participants are residents of Covington, eligibility was also open to individuals working for organizations based in the city.
During the academy’s duration, members will tour city facilities and attend public meetings. They will also hear directly from department directors and explore behind-the-scenes operations. The stated goal is not only education but also building lasting relationships between residents and the city government.
