Residents of Covington, Kentucky, have the opportunity to dispose of electronic waste, paper documents, and foam materials in an environmentally friendly manner on Saturday, June 21. The event will take place at Holmes High School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., marking its tenth year of operation. It is organized by the City in collaboration with the Center for Great Neighborhoods and its Keep Covington Beautiful program.
The event allows for the drop-off of various recyclable items such as electronic waste, confidential documents for shredding, certain types of Styrofoam-like materials, batteries, and light bulbs. The service is free for Covington residents and local organizations including small businesses, schools, churches, and nonprofits. Donations are welcomed to help cover costs.
Sheila Fields, Covington Solid Waste and Recycling Manager, emphasized the importance of proper disposal practices: “We must minimize waste and maximize resource efficiency by keeping components, products, and materials in use for as long as possible,” she said. “Recovering valuable materials contributes to resource conservation.”
Keep Covington Beautiful has contracted R2 RIOS Certified Cohen for handling e-waste such as computer equipment and cell phones which may contain hazardous substances like lead or mercury. Boone County Solid Waste will process polystyrene foam before it is sent to Eco Development for further recycling into new products.
Shred-it will be available at the event to shred paper documents securely. Fields highlighted this service’s role in preventing identity theft: security experts recommend shredding documents containing sensitive information such as social security numbers or bank details.
Accepted items include a wide range of electronics like computers and peripherals; clean expanded polystyrene foam; loose paper without staples or clips; various types of batteries; and light bulbs. Items not accepted include large appliances or equipment containing hazardous materials.
