Mayor Ron Washington has announced the members of Covington’s newly established Housing Development Taskforce. This group is set to devise strategies for expanding the city’s housing stock to accommodate working families.
The taskforce includes Fritz Kuhlmann, Tara Noem, Jean Schroer, Anthony Bradford, David Spaulding, Shannon Ratterman, Tony Kreutzjans, David Hastings, Kareem Simpson, Tom Covert, Shad Sletto, Joe Hansbauer, Wonda Winkler, Lisa Dressman, and Jordan Huizenga. Their mission involves expanding workforce housing inventory in Covington and revitalizing vacant properties.
“This critical taskforce is comprised of individuals who bring the necessary vision and professional acumen to build a strategy that will grow our housing stock to meet the needs of Covington’s working families,” said Mayor Washington.
In addition to the taskforce’s input, community feedback will be sought through formal discussions planned for later this year. Mayor Washington first introduced his plan at the May 13 Board of Commissioners meeting. The initiative aims not only to create new housing but also to preserve neighborhood character and reduce blighted property burdens.
A study by Northern Kentucky Area Development District in 2023 highlighted a need for 6,650 new housing units in the region by 2028. Covington requires 891 units alone.
“This taskforce is a vital first step to ensure that the people who are the backbone of our city – the teachers, tradespeople, and service workers – have access to affordable housing,” said Washington.
Emphasizing an inclusive approach, Mayor Washington stated that “the voices of our residents are essential” for success. Community involvement is encouraged with interested parties urged to contact Sebastian Torres for more information or participation opportunities.
