The City of Covington, in collaboration with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 6 and Tri-State Trails, has completed its first dedicated bike lane. The city will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the occasion on Tuesday, August 19, at 10 a.m. The event will take place at the Russell Street entrance to the Covington Central Riverfront neighborhood.

The new bike lane extends for just over half a mile along West 4th Street, from Garrard Street to Johnson Street. This development is part of ongoing efforts by both Covington and KYTC to expand transportation options and improve safety for all road users.

Mayor Ron Washington commented on the significance of the project: “This new bike lane isn’t just about safer streets, it’s about connection,” he said. “It links the vibrant Roebling Point area with the emerging CCR neighborhood, helping create a more accessible city. This is just the first of many projects we’re pursuing to promote a more sustainable city.”

According to traffic studies, West 4th Street was previously considered oversized for current vehicle volumes. In response, officials reduced the number of vehicle lanes from three to two and narrowed each lane from 12 feet to 11 feet. These changes allowed space for a westbound one-way bike lane without affecting overall traffic flow.

The newly installed bike lane occupies what was formerly a right-side vehicle lane. It includes a five-foot-wide riding path with an additional two-foot painted buffer separating cyclists from motor vehicles.

City officials attribute the success of this project to joint efforts between Covington, KYTC District 6, and Tri-State Trails.

Community members are invited to attend Tuesday’s ribbon-cutting event where remarks will be made by local leaders and partners before officially opening the new bike lane.
