The City of Covington is set to collaborate with Covington Independent Public Schools to enhance and expand youth programming and recreational opportunities. This initiative was introduced by Mayor Ron Washington during a Board of Commissioners meeting, where he announced the creation of the Covington Recreation Committee.
Mayor Washington emphasized the importance of recreation and youth programs for both children and the broader community. He stated, “I grew up playing baseball at Athey Avenue and Craig Streets, shooting free throws at Goebel Park, and eating summer lunch at the 3rd District School. I’ve seen firsthand how powerful youth recreation and support programs can be—not just for kids, but for the community as a whole. They build confidence, connection, and a sense of belonging.”
The newly formed committee will have 15 members co-chaired by Vice Mayor Shannon Smith, Commissioner Tim Acri, and Board of Education Member Kareem Simpson. Members will be appointed by both the Board of Education and Board of Commissioners.
Covington Board of Education Chair Tom Haggard expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential impact on young people in Covington. He shared his personal experiences with sports and recreation, stating, “From learning to play soccer at Latonia Elementary to being a youth worker at the Covington Summer Recreation Program to coaching the boys’ varsity soccer team at Holmes, sports and recreation opportunities have played a large role in my life.”
The committee’s tasks include conducting an inventory of current recreational opportunities for Covington’s youth, identifying ways to align programming with shared facilities and resources, expanding access to after-school and summer activities, addressing service gaps related to youth recreation, and engaging with local youth and stakeholders.
Mayor Washington reiterated the initiative’s goal: “Together, we’re working to ensure that every child in Covington has access to safe, engaging spaces to play, grow, and be part of something positive. This is how we build a better future—for them and for our city.”
