The City of Florence has outlined procedures for snow emergencies, detailing three levels of alerts that affect travel and public safety.

According to city officials, a Level 1 Snow Emergency means roads are hazardous due to blowing or drifting snow, and they may be icy. Drivers are encouraged to move parked vehicles off the roads so plows can clear snow efficiently. The city advises motorists to exercise caution while driving.

A Level 2 Snow Emergency indicates more dangerous conditions. Roads become extremely hazardous with accumulated or blowing snow and possible ice. In this case, only essential travel is advised, and residents should check with their employers about reporting to work.

Under a Level 3 Snow Emergency, conditions are described as extremely dangerous. Travel is restricted only to those required to report to work. Residents are again instructed to confirm with their employers whether they need to report in such circumstances.

The city emphasizes support for crews during these weather events. “During inclement weather, snow crews, emergency responders and essential workers will have to travel on hazardous roadways. Here’s how you can help keep everyone safe, regardless of the snow emergency declared,” officials stated. Recommendations include avoiding crowding snowplows, moving parked cars off streets, and staying home if possible.

Officials also clarified that any level of snow emergency does not directly prohibit travel but urged residents to check with their employers regarding work requirements. “A declared snow emergency does not preempt business openings or closures.”
