The City of Covington has announced the availability of free public education seminars for residents and business owners. The sessions are organized by staff from several city departments, including Fire, Police, Public Works, and Economic Development.

These seminars are designed to address topics such as public safety, quality of life, and sustainability. They are scheduled upon request and generally last about one hour. While most sessions take place at City Offices, off-site presentations can also be arranged.

The fire safety seminar covers essential practices for preventing fires and proper use of fire extinguishers. Participants will receive hands-on training in the “PASS” method using props provided by the Covington Fire Department. Joseph Vance, Assistant Fire Chief, is listed as the contact person for this session.

For those interested in personal security, the police department offers a program on personal safety and scam awareness aimed at adults. The curriculum includes emergency preparedness, identity protection, and ways to recognize scams. There is also a youth-focused seminar on pedestrian and bicycle safety that teaches traffic rules and safe equipment use.

Environmental issues are addressed through sessions on litter management and sustainability. The Solid Waste & Recycling staff teach about waste management using the “4 R’s”: Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Another seminar focuses on stormwater runoff management to prevent flooding and water contamination.

Urban forestry is covered in a session explaining how trees contribute to community health by improving air quality and reducing heat. Proper tree selection and maintenance practices are included in this curriculum.

Finally, property owners and developers can attend seminars on zoning regulations and historic preservation requirements. These cover topics such as zoning maps, permit applications, development codes, and design guidelines.

All seminars are free of charge with specific contacts listed for each topic area.
