Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine have revealed a new design for the companion bridge of the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project. This project, spanning eight miles, is one of the nation’s significant transportation investments aimed at improving safety and fostering economic growth.
Covington Mayor Ron Washington expressed enthusiasm for the new bridge. “Covington is a river city known for its important bridges – the historic Roebling Suspension Bridge, the cantilever structured Clay Wade Bailey Bridge, and the heavily traveled Brent Spence Bridge,” said Mayor Washington. “This announcement only strengthens that reputation. This beautiful installation will be a centerpiece in our effort to welcome our regional and national community to Covington.”
The chosen design is a cable-stayed independent deck bridge, offering lower costs and easier construction compared to other options. The structure will use cabling systems similar to those on modern bridges like Louisville’s Abraham Lincoln Bridge and Toledo’s Veterans Glass City Skyway.
“The new companion bridge will be a game-changer for commuting families, and it’ll revolutionize a crucial economic corridor,” stated Gov. Beshear. He emphasized that this long-anticipated project would proceed without tolls.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) managed the design selection process. The design was evaluated based on visual appeal, connection with existing structures, potential as a landmark, technical reviews, wind testing, cost efficiency, constructability, and schedule.
Currently configured for southbound traffic into Kentucky on its upper deck, the Brent Spence Bridge will see northbound drivers using the top level of the new bridge for views of Cincinnati’s skyline.
“This companion bridge reflects the values of the communities it connects – practical, forward-looking and built to last,” commented KYTC Secretary Jim Gray.
ODOT Director Pamela Boratyn described it as a “long-overdue” investment in regional infrastructure: “For decades, communities have waited for a safer, more efficient crossing that not only eases traffic and improves safety but also strengthens one of our most critical freight corridors.”
